Photography Junky

Well, photography Blog Junky to be more exact. There are some great photographers out there who blog on a regular basis and they are a treasure trove. Each have their wonderful tricks and are more than happy to share them. It is sort of like going to a conference and sitting around a table just talking the trade, only easier. Here is a post by a great wedding photographer Matt Adcock, Flash Flavor.

One of the tricks to shooting with a flash off of the camera is that you really need to do this in manual mode. Sure some setups allow you to use TTL (letting the camera make the choices), but you don’t always get what you want when you look at your shots later. If the flash is in manual and the camera is in manual, then you know what you are getting. But then the problems come in. Darn laws of physics state that the intensity of light falls off when you pull the flash away. Little thing called the inverse square law. When you are shooting an event, you have likely noticed that people move. Often faster than you can adjust where your flashes are mounted. So you need to learn your camera. You need to learn to eyeball the distance between your subject and the flash and adjust your aperture to compensate. This will help reduce the number of shots where the subject is blown out or too dark.

Of course the key to this technique is practice. Matt wrote a great blog about this and it is a great read if you use your flash in manual mode off of your camera.

Memorial Day Pool

The kids had a blast. Lots of friends, splashing and playing. Hot showers, water slides, swimming. I knew the water was cold, but the kids swore the water was really warm. So alas, I jumped in. I surfaced only to scream like I was 3. The water was ice! They all laughed and continued to have a good time.

Memorial Day weekend is here

OK, it is here. Memorial Day weekend. I have been really busy this week and have not had much time to update this blog. My bad.

It is the official kick off of summer. The YMCA pool opens this weekend. In fact, most all of the pools that are not already open will open. My daughter started swim practice this week. She swore the water was not cold as she wrapped the towel around her while her teeth were chattering.

So to cover for my lack of posting this week, I have pulled a couple of pictures that I have not shared before. You may recognize them as being similiar (well from shoots you have seen). The model shot, with the blue background was from the same shoot where the main page photo came from. This is a little different. Generic, but I liked the lighting. Thanks Tommy Gooch.

And then you can’t ignore the Rome’s. He rocks..

Have a great weekend and take some pictures!
