Third Tuesday of the month means it is meetup night for the Triangle Strobist Group. Over the last few months the group has been working on model shots with multiple lights. This month we went back to the basics. We followed the directions posted on the strobist website, http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/09/super-cheap-diy-ring-flash.html.

As you can see from this larger shot taken last night, the light is extremely even. I shot it using my Canon 580EXII and TTL for proper exposure. Sure that is against the strobist way, but I was goofing and that was easy. As for the effect, I am not sold. Well, I guess I am in for about $10 in odd pieces and supplies.

That said, I did get some fun shots out of it. I really liked this shot of scuba steve. Also, the ring light gives great catch light. If you look close, you can see the ring light in their eyes.

So, should you build one? If you have time and $10 to blow, go for it. You will not carry it in your bag, but every once in a while you will pull it out of the closet and have fun. And that is what photography is all about right? Having fun.
