Look at things from a different angle.

I often get made fun of for using my DSLR and to take pictures from odd angles without looking. Well, truth be said, I was looking. Not with my viewfinder, but with my imagination. We all have it and should not be scared to use it. Sure, if you are shooting film, this method does not work. Film is just too dang expensive. But with digital, you get to see if it was interesting right there. This photo was shot while walking around the Old NC State Capital building in Raleigh. This public fountain looked decrepit. The green did not appear to be growth of any super small animals, yet was just the color of the basin. It was interesting enough on it’s own, but I saw it from this angle in my head and took a picture. I was pleased with the result. No flash.

Shot with Canon 5D, 28mm, f1.8 at 1/400th of a second.

We all do them. We all screw them up. I’m OK with the lighting, the setting and such. I hate the way I look and the fact that we are all in the same plane. One of the diffucult things about taking a self familly portrait is the fact that you can’t see what you are getting at the moment of the exposure. Yes, you may say it was that way when we shot film, but I mean something different. Had I been behind the camera, I would have caught my up tight pose and made me laugh. I also would have caught the fact that we were all at the same level.

Heck, we live and we learn.

This was shot with a 430EX Speedlite shot into an umbrella to the camera’s right. The camera was the Canon 5D with the Canon 70-200/2.8L IS.
